2021 HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY HOCKEY
PRE-SEASON INVITATIONAL
TOURNAMENT RULES
I. PLAYERS / ROSTERS:
- All tournament players must be listed on their team’s CERTIFIED ROSTER. If player is not on the Certified Roster, they cannot play in this Tournament.
- If a team plays a non-certified player, they will forfeit ALL games in the Tournament. No protests are allowed.
- USA Hockey rules allow 20 players on the bench per game.
- Games may start up to 15 minutes before scheduled time as determined by Tournament Director.
II. GAME & PLAYING RULES:
- USA Hockey rules apply.
- All teams are guaranteed 3 games. A round robin format will be played within each group with the winner of each group moving on to the quarterfinal round. Three wild card teams will be awards the remaining quarterfinal positions.
- Pre-game warm-up of five minute.
- Game Length: Three 17-minute stop time periods.
- All games will be played to a winner. See specific rules on overtime and shootout.
- Scoring: 2 points for a win in regulation, 2 points for a win in shootout, 1 point for loss in shootout, 0 points for a loss in regulation.
- Time Outs: Each team is allowed (1) 60-second time out. Unused Time Outs carry into OT.
- Mercy Rule: If at any time during the third period one team is ahead by 5 goals or more, running time will continue until the deficit is 3 goals or less. The maximum goal differential (for plus/minus purposes) will be 5.
- Misconducts: A team (more than two) or player (more than one) with excessive misconducts within the duration of the Tournament will be reviewed by the Tournament Committee and subject to suspension for the balance of the Tournament.
- Game Misconducts: Any player receiving a game misconduct will be suspended for the remainder of that game plus the team's next tournament game. If a player receives a 2nd Game misconduct during the Tournament, he is suspended for the remainder of the Tournament.
- Match or Fighting penalties: Will result in that player/coach expulsion from the Tournament.
- A maximum of 4 coaches or 3 coaches and 1 trainer are allowed behind the bench.
- Teams should be prepared to supply an official to work in the scorer's box if necessary.
- The tournament host will supply timers and score keepers for each game where possible.
- Penalty box: Each team must provide a penalty box attendant during each game. The individual manning the penalty box is responsible for understanding rules pertaining to penalties. Also, this individual must be advised that he/she is there to open and close the door to the penalty box, and not to initiate any conversation with the on- or off-ice officials, coaches, players, or spectators. Teams may be assessed a penalty for their actions, if warranted.
- Ice Resurface: The ice will be resurfaced after the second period and after the completion of a game.
- Teams should bring DARK and LIGHT colored jerseys. Home teams will wear light jerseys and away teams will wear dark jerseys. If a team does NOT have the proper jerseys, they must report this to the Tournament Director immediately.
- Score Sheets: Score sheet will be available at sign in desk after game. All players listed must correspond with certified roster provided.
- Behavior: Coaches, Managers and Team officials are responsible for controlling their players and parents to insure that each game is played safely with no vulgar language or harmful infractions displayed. The Team is responsible for any damages caused by their players, parents, children, or responsible fans to the arena facility.
- Each team is expected to clean their bench and locker room after each use. Please return locker room keys after doing this for return of collected credentials.
- Liability waiver: The Tournament will not be responsible for injuries to a player, coach, spectator, or the transport of injured players. It is the team and parent's responsibility to insure that all players are covered by insurance prior to the Tournament.
- Disputes are not allowed. Tournament Director's decisions are final.
- Zero Tolerance: Zero tolerance rules will be strictly enforced. Teams, Coaches and Club Officials are expected to police their own within the duration of the Tournament. If a player, coach or spectator is asked to leave the facility by an On-Ice or Tournament Official (in yellow jacket), that individual will be suspended from the Tournament with no refund of monies paid. If ejected, a VIOLATION will be reported to the AHAI R&E committee. The offending Club or Clubs may not be invited back by the Tournament Committee in subsequent years.
III. ROUND ROBIN / WILDCARD TIEBREAKER RULES:
- Round Robin Tiebreaker Rules in priority order:
- Standings, Most Points.
- Head-to-head.
- Total Wins
- Regulation Wins
- Goals against
- Largest Goal differential: Total Goals For minus Total Goals Against (5 goal differential maximum per game).
- Fewest Total Penalty Minutes.
- Quickest First Goal: Team scoring the quickest goal in their round robin games.
THE TOP TEAM FROM EACH GROUP MOVES ON TO THE QUARTER-FINALS. THE THREE WILDCARD TEAMS WILL BE DETERMINED USING THE SAME TIEBREAKERS AS ABOVE
IV. ROUND ROBIN RULES SHOOTOUT RULES:
- Tied Round Robin games will to directly to a sudden death shootout - 1 shooter per team until there is a winner
- The HOME team will decide if they want to shoot first or last.
- Any player whose penalty has not been completed when the overtime period ended will be ineligible to participate in the sudden death shootout.
- At the end of any Sudden Death Shootout round, if one team has scored and the other team has not, then the team that scored will be declared the winner. The winner of the shootout will be credited with one additional goal in the final score.
- T.J. Oshie Rule - During this Sudden Death Shootout, any player, with the exception of a player still under penalty, may be selected as the shooter as many times as necessary until a winner is declared.
V. QUARTER FINAL, SEMI FINAL AND CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES
- If a game is tied at the end of regulation, a 5-minute stop time sudden death overtime period will be played.
- The overtime period will be played 3-on-3.
- Teams will remain on the ice and not change ends.
- Player penalties from regulation will carry over to overtime. A team with a powerplay will be awarded a 4th player on the ice until the penalty expires then the game will continue 4-on-4 until the next whistle.
- The first team to score in overtime wins the game.
- If no goal is scored in the overtime period between either team, there will be a Three Man Shootout. If a winner is not declared, there will be a sudden death shootout. See rules above for sudden death shootout.
